Dermal Filler FAQs
What to know
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectable cosmetic treatments approved by the FDA to help smooth skin and wrinkles. They are primarily target soft tissues in the face to improve smile lines. Dermal fillers can also be used to plump up lips and cheeks, and are sometimes used for hand treatments or to reduce the appearance of scars. There are several types of dermal fillers. One of the popular is a hyaluronic acid filler that restores a naturally occurring sugar in the body that helps keep skin hydrated and smooth. JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® are two of the most popular name brand hyaluronic acid dermal filler injections.
What’s the difference between dermal fillers and Botox?
Dermal fillers and Botox are both cosmetic injection treatments predominantly used to reduce wrinkles in the face. They are minimally invasive and can produce long lasting results. However, they are two different forms of treatment, and are often used for different reasons. Botox and dermal fillers are typically used in different areas of the face, with dermal fillers primarily targeting smile lines and Botox addressing wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes. There are many types of dermal fillers, one of the most popular being fillers using hyaluronic acid, a sugar naturally produced in the body that hydrates and causes smoothness in the skin. Juvéderm and Restylane are two branded versions of this type of filler. Botox is actually not a procedure but a brand name of a type of botulinum toxin injection (also known as neuromodulators). Another popular brand of neuromodulator is Dysport. (Along with dermal fillers, we provide both Botox and Dysport treatment at our center.) Although different, dermal fillers and Botox are used in conjunction as complimentary treatments to achieve desired results. We recommend consulting our licensed trained cosmetic physician to determine the best options for your skin.
How long do dermal fillers last?
On average dermal fillers made with hyaluronic acid, like Juvéderm and Restylane, last between 12 and 18 months. The results provided by the majority of dermal fillers are temporary, but their positive impacts can be maintained with touch-ups once or twice a year.
